Benny Benson hates to listen because when he was four his ears were pulled off by a gorilla and now he’s got no ears, just holes.
Mary Who Loved Skipping Rocks
There once was a little girl Mary who loved skipping rocks. She skipped rocks at the river that ran behind her house.
She took a thin one. She skipped it six skips. She took a thinner one. Six skips. She skipped the thinnest one of all. Seven skips, right into the boulder. Clack.
The boulder raised up, a giant eye fixed on Mary.
“Have you been good to your mother?” it said.
Mary didn’t know what to do. She stood there, looking at the rock. The rock looked at her.
“Well, have you?” it said.
No. She hadn’t done any of her chores.
“Your mother will love you less and less,” said the boulder. It sank back into the river and looked like a boulder.
The Boy Nun
He tried to impress everyone. He lied all the time. He told everyone his parents were dead.
Now he lives with the nuns. He tells one who’s crazy that she’s pregnant. ‘I’m the father,’ he says when they are alone.
The nuns agree it’s best to cover it up. If he’s a nun too maybe there’s no problem.
He was happy he would be a father and a nun.
He wore his habit, he gave alms, he counseled the poor, he raised his son.
Two boy nuns.
